State school building Seestadt Aspern - Vienna

A simple orthogonal load bearing system of columns and ceiling boards creates the base structure of the compact building body. “Perforations” of the ceiling boards enable the illumination of the building inside and determine the position of the vertical developments. The hall-like base structure enables a flexible "filling" of the floors: open spaces inside and closed room sequences along the outer zones stand in dialogue. Flexibility, adaptability and alterability are the central point of the concept.

The entrance level of the school building is the pivot of the building. Horizontal and vertical development routes are merged here. The entrance level is connected to the public space through covered forecourts. Open lounge areas lead to the inside school free space. The meeting place flanked from seated stands in the outdoor area is a link between the indoor development level and the green spaces. Two main staircase areas and the central
atrium create orientation points in the inside and they are floor-wise surrounded by "public areas".
All the class rooms dispose of a direct exit to the outside: circulating free spaces extend the associated rooms to the outside and ensure natural sun protection.

The compactness of the building ensures energy efficiency and enables high degree of flexibility and alterability - central requirements of a modern building.
