Pfarre Korneuburg - Lower Austria

The existing vestry, together with the new building for the priest and acolyte vestry, and the easily recognisable addition to the parish hall form an ensemble, which encloses a newly created square. The square can be used in a variety of ways, and the connecting bridge separates it from the public space. As a result the original entrance door of the church again becomes the main entrance. By pulling the new vestry away from the volume of the existing church this is left untouched; the architecturally important exterior of the church remains unchanged. A “glass joint” sensitively links the connecting bridge to the church through an existing opening and without damaging the historic surround. Through the transparency of the bridge – especially in the connecting element to the church – the historical appearance remains largely unaffected.
Transparent, flowing transitions create a continuous space from the parish hall, across the parish square, to the neighbouring public space. Paths and ramps integrate the existing church gardens into the overall concept.
